About the collections

The Imperial War Museum Collections Access is a unique national reference library on twentieth and twenty-first century conflict involving Britain and Commonwealth countries. The collection includes unit histories, technical manuals, biographies, autobiographies, and publications on the military, economic, social and cultural aspects of war.

Holdings include newspapers, trench journals, propaganda leaflets, prisoner of war material, and pamphlets such as those issued by the War Office and the Ministry of Information, alongside significant holdings of grey literature, maps, and ephemera. Among the very rare and unique holdings are a collection of 789 First World War German Unit Histories (in German), and a collection of over 2000 Luftwaffe Target Folders

Accessing materials

Can I see live document availability on Copac? No.

Can I obtain items via Inter Library Loan? No. The Imperial War Museum Collections Access is a national refernce library, so items are not available through inter-library loan.

Can I visit the library to view materials? Yes. The Research Room is open Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 5.00pm, by appointment only. However, as our books stack is currently being refurbished parts of our collection may be unavailable. Anyone wishing to consult our collections must contact Library staff to confirm availability.
