Search for the names of people or organisations, eg. the author or editor of a book, the producer of a film. Not all records include names such as a translator or a project funding body.
- Enter a personal name by which the author, editor etc. is generally
known, eg:
Author, Editor etc.: T. S. Eliot
Author, Editor etc.: Austen, Jane
Author, Editor etc.: Arthur C Clarke - A search with initials will also find full names starting with those
initials.
Eg: a search for W Smith finds W. Smith, William Smith, Wendy Smith etc. on Copac (but not on ESTC). - Enter an organisation name such as a
government department, company, or charity, eg: to find 'The Royal Society for
the Protection of Birds' you might enter:
Author etc.: royal protection birds
You may get different results if you use a full name or acronym, eg. RSPB.
Other features
- To find variant word endings cut the word ending and replace it with an asterisk *. Eg: Graham* will find 'Graham' and 'Grahame'. Don't truncate common words to less than 5 letters.
- You can search using non-roman scripts such as Chinese or Arabic, though this is likely to find only newer documents.
- It is usual for non-roman script text to be transliterated, but spellings can vary between records. Try searches for possible spelling variants eg: Tchaikovsky vs Chaikovskii.
- The results of an author search are usually sorted by title and date. To change the display order use the 'Sort by' option towards the top of the Brief Display. Choose the sort order you want, then select the 'Sort' button. If you find over 750 records they are not automatically sorted. You can use the 'Sort by' option to sort up to 2,500 records, though it may be slow.
