About the library
Copac does not contain the whole catalogue - it only contains records for the Middle East Collections, the Arab World Documentation Unit and Special Collections.
The Middle East Collection is strong in most areas of Islamic studies, especially religion, philosophy, history, Arabic literature and all the social sciences. The AWDU covers all aspects of life (except literature and religion) in the Arabian countries plus Iran. The major strengths of the Special Collections include mediaeval and early modern history, nineteenth century studies and history of popular culture, and twentieth century literary and historical studies.
The Special Collections, and the Arabic literature collections, are housed in the Old Library. The Arabic World Documentation Unit is in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies.
The local library catalogue is available online.
Accessing materials
Can I see live document availability on Copac? Yes. The Copac local holdings display will tell you if a document is currently on-loan, reference only etc. as well giving you local location details.
Can I obtain items via Inter Library Loan? The majority of materials in the Middle East collection are available via interlibrary loan. You have to request an inter-library loan via a library of which you are a member. Talk to your own library staff about whether they think the document you need is likely to be available for loan and for advice on making an inter-library loan request. The AWDU collections and Special Collections are only available for reference use.
Can I visit the library to view materials? Yes - visit the library's web site for access details. If you wish to visit it is advisable to contact the library in advance to ensure the material you need will be available.
How do I find primary source material held at this institution? Visit the University of Exeter's contributor page at the Archives Hub for information.
