About the library

The Science Museum Library is a major research library for the history and public understanding of the pure and applied sciences, the branches of engineering, technology and industry, and their impact on human life. It holds around 500,000 items which are held at two sites:

  • Wroughton near Swindon: Holds original scientific and technical books and periodicals, bibliographical literature, directories etc from the last 500 years, including rare books and special collections
  • South Kensington in London: contains a world class collection on the history, biography and social context of science and technology, plus reprints of classic works.

The Science Museum Library catalogue forms part of the Imperial College London Library catalogue, which is available online. Some older material is not yet included in the online catalogue, please contact the Library in London to check the old card catalogue.

Accessing materials

Can I see live document availability on Copac? No.

Can I obtain items via Inter Library Loan? Yes in many cases, via Imperial College's Inter Library Loan service. Please see the Imperial College Library page for information.
